FAQ
Waist beads have been worn for centuries in many countries in Africa for many cultural purposes. African waist beads are thought to originate among the Yoruba tribes of Africa, a significant proportion of whose population is now settled within Nigeria. Many of them have a spiritual meaning and are worn typically by women. Also, Ghana is regarded as the ‘bead production capital of the World. Beads have been a part of African history for centuries for both ornamental and symbolic adornments. The wearing of waist beads among the Asante tribe is still a popular, and even fashionable trend today. Waist beads help embrace femininity, maintain weight loss, and accentuate the waist. Many Africans have decided to sell waistbeads to share the culture and allow all races of women to wear the waist beads so that they can also experience the beauty, femininity, and confidence that waist beads bring! In our modern day, beauty supply stores and black-owned shops continue to sell waist beads to all races! In the United States, we are a melting pot, and we embrace, share, and take part in many things from other cultures!

Are you being a culture vulture by wearing waist beads? Are waist beads only for African women? Can white women wear waist beads?
These are all the questions that I hear from women all around the world as waist beads become more popular/trendy.
"Cultural appropriation is the adoption of an element or elements of one culture or identity by members of another culture or identity. This can be controversial when members of a dominant culture appropriate from disadvantaged minority cultures". -Wikipedia
Based on the definition above and the clear understanding that adopting other cultures traditions can become negative when credit isn't given to the original source/culture.
As an African woman who sells waist beads, I am more that happy to share that side of my culture or tradition to everyone who is willing to respect it. I have noticed that many women are using waist beads to track and manage their weight and to spice up their relationship. Their intentions of wearing waist beads are personal to each woman and respect them for appreciating African culture.
